Folk Art
vintage signed, hand carved and hand painted sporting wooden duck decoy
by
Gary Lowenthal,
realized in
1965.
This now
55 year-old
Ame
ri
can
wooden duck decoy
features the seldom portrayed
Bufflehead Drake
species of duck, with its characteristic stout, compact body and tufted crest of gathered plumage atop its strangely shaped head. Perhaps only the
Merganser Drake
has an equally memorable, distinct form, as does the
Bufflehead Drake.
The
solid wood sporting accessory
features most likely
white cedar wood construction,
with a
stationary, stick-up style,
where the head's fastened to the lower body and doesn't move or pivot left or right. The duck's signed on the baseplate in incised, cursive writing
'Gary Lowethal, (19)65 Bufflehead Drake.'
It still has both of its original, affixed glass eyes and is tri-colored, with a deep charcoal black, complimented by a noticeably raked off-white. The duck's bill is a deep pewter gray. There's no 'in-painting' and no repairs (old or new.) Absolutely terrific.
CONDITION:
Very Good to Excellent overall vintage condition.
