Schubert Theater on Broadway in 1975. With its creation and direction by Michael Bennett, the musical was an unprecedented hit at the box office. It received 12 Tony Award nominations---and won 9. It also won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The New York production on Broadway ran for 6,137 performances. Until it was surpassed by
CATS
in 1997,
A Chorus Line
was considered the longest-running production in the history of Broadway. It still remains the 7th longest-running show on Broadway, spawning many successful productions around the world.
